This curriculum is designed for three weeks of class time, and students begin by learning engineering and rapid prototype processes and seeing how the 3-D printer operates. Then, they work in teams to design their own battery-operated cars, using the 3-D printer to make parts to construct their vehicles. Finally, they see the results of their work on race day.

Written by an engineer, this classroom activity was developed to address several Next Generation Science Standards, specifically the Grades 6-9 Engineering Design performance expectations. Aside from helping instructors meet standards, the activity helps students experience real-world conditions such as peer review and working within a budget.

Includes a DVD, teacher’s guide, five Competition catalogs, and drill assemblies for cleaning axle holes. Requires 3-D printer (not included) and 3-D Printing: Vehicle Engineering Notebooks, (sold separately).

In this workbook, students are first introduced to drafting instruments and equipment and how to measure using a scale. They become skilled with American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) line conventions and geometric construction and conclude with basic dimensioning and drawing techniques. All 64 pages are self-instructing and incorporate current ASME drafting standards.

The Level II drafting workbook provides students with exposure to single-view, multiview, isometric, sectional, and auxiliary drawings. Each drawing type is explained in detail and reinforced through self-explanatory, hands-on exercises. In addition, this eight-chapter, 94-page workbook covers advanced dimensioning techniques and various fasteners. All instructional worksheets incorporate current ASME drafting standards.

Introduce students to the customary system of linear measurement and the mathematical concepts students must know to measure accurately. Students learn fractions, link fractions to measurement, and then practice measuring in iterations of a unit. Math activities are sequential with each activity, building on the knowledge, understanding, and mastery of each preceding activity and concept.

Topics include adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions; reflexive, symmetric, and transitive mathematical properties; reading a ruler; taking a measurement; estimating distance; calculating area (in two- and three-dimensional objects); relationships among standard units of length; and much more.

Duration: 500 minutes (8.33 hours).

Curriculum Goals

  • Demonstrate an understanding of fractions.
  • Understand the connection between fractions and linear measurement.
  • Discover that linear measurement is connected to geometry.
  • Develop an ability to estimate fractional distances.
  • Compare the properties of an object using measurement.
